Wednesday 25 June: A return visit to the Euston Estate near Thetford. Euston Hall has been the home of the Dukes of Grafton for over 350 years. The 10,500 acre estate comprises landscaped gardens, parkland, ancient broadleaf woodland and agricultural farmland. The visit will start with a talk in The Old Kitchen by the archivist, Edward Wortley, on the Dukedom, the Hall and the estate. Following the talk there will be a tour around the estate with the Estate Director, Robert Childerhouse, who will cover the variety of crops which are grown on the irrigated sandy soils, the raising of sheep, beef cattle and pigs, and the production of electricity from anaerobic digestion and solar farms. Wednesday 6 August: The Hardwick Estate. Fellow SCS member, Alison Lennox will give us a talk about the history of The Hardwick Estate near Bury St Edmunds at the Southgate Community Centre. Hardwick House was built on what were formerly the medieval grazing lands of St Edmundsbury Abbey. The manor house, originally built by Sir Robert Drury (Speaker of the House of Commons) was sold to Sir Thomas Cullum in 1656 and remained in the Cullum family until the 1920s. In the afternoon, Alison and Malcolm Lennox have kindly invited us for afternoon tea in their garden at Home Farm House which was part of the Hardwick Estate.
